Excellent and important essay. To nerd out a bit, your thought brings to mind Heidegger and das Man, the They; Foucault’s disciplined power; Satre’s bad faith. Very phenomenological and existential.

That’s some heady company! I wonder if they also felt like they were trying to wrangle a mess of post-it note and string connections into something remotely digestible. Most of the time I feel completely overwhelmed by the connections that seem so obvious but are ludicrously difficult to explain in any sort of linear way.
